DOTA 2: A Beginner’s Guide
DOTA 2 (Defense of the Ancients) is a globally played MOBA strategy game released by Valve in 2013. In the year 2020, the esports game averaged over 600,000 monthly active players and gained millions of viewers in popular streaming media like Twitch and Youtube.
The standard DOTA game is played in two teams of five characters, called Radiant and Dire, with bases in the opposite corners of the map. Maps are divided into three lines (top, mid, and bot) that connect both bases and a river in between that separates the two territories.
Every 30 seconds, AI-controlled bugs appear, called creeps that go to the enemy base to fight against their creeps and towers. The main objective of the game is to destroy the enemy building called Ancient. To achieve this objective, each player can choose a character to play with from among the 120 heroes that are available to everyone from the beginning. The huge amount of heroes to choose from makes the game so complex that it requires thousands of hours of gameplay to master all the skills.
