Frequently asked questions about StarCraft II
What is the biggest SC2 tournament?
IEM Katowice in Poland. There's been no official world championship since Blizzard's own WCS circuit ended, but Katowice's prize pool, top players and long history make it the closest thing the scene has to a world title.
What is GSL?
The Global StarCraft II League: Korea's top league and the longest-running in SC2 (since 2010). Code S is the top division. For years its English broadcast was Tasteless and Artosis ("Tastosis"), two of the longest-serving casters in esports.
What are the three SC2 races?
Terran (humans, mobile bio and mech armies), Protoss (psionic aliens, expensive but powerful units) and Zerg (an insect-like swarm with a fast economy). Players pick one race and stick with it. Balance is always debated; Blizzard stopped developing SC2, but the community-led Balance Council still releases balance patches between big tournaments.
Why do Korean players dominate?
StarCraft has been a national esport in Korea since the early 2000s, with full-time team houses, coaches and the deepest player pool in the world. The original StarCraft: Brood War scene was on Korean TV. Korea's competitive setup was years ahead of everywhere else, and new talent kept coming even as the scene elsewhere shrank.
